This site is intended to provide supplemental resources for those taking my classes dealing with insects. This includes my Art and Science in the Woods (ASIW) class which I typically teach every June (at the Sun Foundation). As I add classes, you will find them under the Outreach link above. The ASIW page for 2026 is also linked here.

Have you ever wondered what this ASIW class is like? I put together a short video (including a cartoon version of my younger self) to help you better understand.

I always consider it quite an honor to spend a week teaching others about the fascinating world of insects at the Sun Foundation (and other venues). For some prior years, I updated the news pages with daily information about the insects we encounter. I thought it might be helpful for others to experience some of the insects we encounter on a daily basis.

Since the 2025 class has now ended – those who would like to learn more about insects are invited to participate in our monthly “bug club “field trips. They are held the third Saturday of each month (except December). Follow the link to our site to learn more. We look forward to seeing you at these events throughout the year.

Moving forward, I am using iNaturalist to document insects encountered in central Illinois. If you are interested in central Illinois insects, please consider joining our iNaturalist central Illinois insects project. This is where subsequent records will be kept.

2025 marked 50 years of Art and Science in the Woods. What a magnificent program. I am so glad to have been a small part over the years. My first meeting with Joan and Bob happened in 1984. Hard to believe that was 41 years ago. A video synopsis of the program was recently posted on YouTube. It is linked below. Just skip past the ad and enjoy.
